What is a
Podiatrist?
Podiatrists are allied health professionals that are dedicated to foot care. They treat all foot ailments, which affect patients of all ages. A podiatrist can assist with these common foot problems, and other more complex issues that you may have with your feet:
- Sports injuries relating to the feet (biomechanical injuries)
- Running and sports shoes
- Corns and callus
- Toenail problems
- Foot skin conditions
- Foot pain
- Diabetic foot evaluation and care
- ‘Pins and needles’ in the feet
- Foot care during pregnancy
- Geriatric foot care
- Appropriate shoe selection
- Foot odour
Measuring systems:
Video analysis – three cameras video the patient on a treadmill to assess posture and gait (walking patterns) At the same time pressure sensors are placed within the shoes and pressure mapping is done at the same time the video is recording.
During this analysis Diabetic patients can be properly monitored for high risk areas of ulceration and distribution of pressure for existing ulcers.
Sports people can be monitored for foot function and the correct insoles can be made.
Various methods of capturing the foot positions is done, from foam imprints to digital scanning. This is individually decided for each patient by the CPO, Technition and Podiatrist.
