If you have diabetes, it’s important to take care of your feet. Poorly controlled blood sugar can damage the nerves and blood vessels that go to the feet. Foot injuries can quickly lead to problems for people with diabetes.

Even if you don’t have foot problems now, you should keep your feet clean and dry and wear socks and shoes all the time.

1. When it comes to shoe insoles, softer = better.

Completely soft insoles are not only ineffective but they actually “pamper the problem”. You may find that initially, you love the feeling of slipping your foot into a shoe with a soft, cushiony insole, but in reality, those types of insoles do nothing to fix the root problem: misalignment of the feet.

People with flat feet, also known as fallen arches, have either no arch in their feet or one that is very low. There is usually a gap beneath the inner part of the foot when a person stands, as the arch raises off the ground slightly. Flat feet, indicate an underlying disorder or lead to pain elsewhere in the body. Some people appear to have a very low arch or no arch without ever experiencing problems. When flat feet do cause symptoms, simple devices and exercises can help to minimize the discomfort.

Diabetes is a condition which affects the concentration of glucose in your blood stream. It results from a persistently raised blood glucose level as a consequence of reduced production and/or impaired effectiveness of insulin (Lorimer et al 2006). Hyperglycaemia or raised blood sugar is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and over time leads to serious damage to many of the body systems especially the nerves and blood vessels (WHO, 2017).
